Life insurance for retirees looks different than life insurance for 35-year-olds
Most life insurance advice is written for working-age people raising families. If that's you, the answers are usually pretty straightforward: term life, big enough to cover your income for 10–20 years, done.
If you're already retired or approaching retirement, the math changes. Your kids are grown, the mortgage may be paid, and you don't need to replace decades of income. What you may want instead:
A small policy to cover final expenses so your spouse or kids don't have to come up with $10,000+ for a funeral
A policy that pays off the mortgage so a surviving spouse doesn't have to sell the house
A small legacy for grandchildren or a charity
Coverage that pairs with your retirement plan, for example, choosing a higher-payout pension option and using a life policy to protect your spouse if you go first
Different goals, different products. We only recommend the coverage you actually need.
Why we're picky about which carriers we recommend
Not all carriers are equally honest. Some have a reputation for fighting claims. Some hike premiums on older policyholders. Some are about to be acquired and you don't know what the new owner will do. We've watched this market for over a decade, we know which carriers actually pay claims promptly and which ones we won't recommend regardless of price.
Answered straight.

How much life insurance do I actually need?
It depends on what you're protecting. For a working-age person with a spouse and kids, the rule of thumb is 10× your annual income. For a retiree, it's usually much less, often just enough to cover final expenses, pay off any remaining debts, and leave a small legacy. We'll work the numbers with you specifically, not a generic calculator.
-
What's the difference between term, whole, and final-expense life?
Term life covers a specific time period (10, 20, or 30 years) at a low premium, best for working-age folks with mortgages or kids at home. Whole life covers you for life and builds cash value, but is much more expensive. Final-expense (also called burial insurance) is a smaller whole-life policy specifically designed to cover funeral costs and end-of-life expenses, usually $5,000–$25,000 in coverage and easier to qualify for at older ages.

Can I get coverage if I have health conditions?
Often yes. Different carriers have very different rules, what one carrier rates up or declines, another may accept at a standard rate. That's exactly why working with an independent broker matters. We shop multiple carriers so you see real options.
-
Will I have to take a medical exam?
It depends on the policy and the amount. Many smaller policies (especially final-expense) require only health questions, no exam. Larger term and whole-life policies often require an exam, but more carriers are offering no-exam options every year. We'll show you both.
